“Language is the source of misunderstandings.”- Antoine de Saint-Exupery
I visited Beijing in 2012 as part of a Summer Study Abroad Program. I was there for two weeks and the highlight of my trip was the Great Wall of China. What I remember the guide telling us about the Wall was that we would access it by traveling up the mountain via cable car. The men in our group were given another option of access – “He who has not climbed the Great Wall is not a true man.” So, while the females in our group readied themselves for a cable car ride to the top of the mountain, a group of young men began their walk/climb to the top to ensure “true manhood.”

I was naive in my cable car readiness. I have a love-hate relationship with heights. While I have no problem flying, have been to the observation deck of the Sears Tower (Willis Tower), attended rooftop parties at high-rise buildings and the like, I don’t necessarily enjoy riding glass elevators in tall buildings (anything over 5 stories) and chickened out of indoor skydiving because the instructor went too high during his demonstration. That being said, I had to talk myself into this cable car ride up a mountain with the understanding that a cable car is enclosed on all sides.
Fully committed to seeing the Wall, I waited in line for the arrival of the “cable car.” What arrived was in essence a ski lift – clearly something was lost in translation. After being paired with another girl in our group we were secured in place with a handlebar and ascended up the mountain, feet dangling above the trees. I summoned enough courage to attempt photos up the mountain – the beginning of some pretty awesome views.

The Wall is truly an experience and a full-body fitness program. At some points I was walking, and others climbing just to get to the next watchtower. I believe we visited the Mutianyu section which has about 23 towers total. Of course there were plenty points to rest along the way as well as vendors selling water and refreshments. *Note: We had been warned that refreshments along the wall would be more expensive so just opt to bring your own refreshments/water. Also, the bathrooms especially near and on the wall are less westernized so if you’re a female from the States be forewarned and prepared.

After some time spent exploring, there was the whole consideration of getting back down the mountain – cue self-manned toboggans. A fun surprise awaits you when you reach the bottom…
